One could attack by land, air, and sea, with unit choices that would appear overwhelming at first. The game had an unprecedented diversity of units. More advanced builder units would create more advanced resource gathering structures. Instead of gathering, structures would be built that provided resources at a continuous rate. He was, however, very slow to move and could be overwhelmed eventually by a great number of even low level units. It just took a lot of power to fire, which would be at a premium to start the game. In fact, he had a weapon called a "D-Gun," one shot from which any unit in the game would be destroyed. The commander would discourage any effective early rushes, since he was an excellent military unit as well. Instead of "villagers," with TA the player would begin the game with the most powerful unit - a "commander" that would start the process by building basic resource gathering structures and unit producing buildings. The ends will never change with RTS, but the means certainly can, and TA did just that.

Up to this point, RTS games ran almost identically: build "villagers," gather one or more resources, build structures including a few to upgrade units and gain technologies, build an army, and trounce all opposition. Total Annihilation, or TA as fans refer to it, was and still is ahead of its time. My friends and I would gather at the house of one with a LAN (that was not so bug-free) and we'd play into the wee hours.

Despite this, Total Annihilation is a sheer blast to play. TA has but one introductory film sequence, rather monotonous narration on mission briefings, no characters to identify with, and has only two sides compared to StarCrafts vastly varied three. The gamer has to be interested in commanding those troops. It's not about graphics, just like movies aren't about special effects, it's about story. That is the only thing that Total Annihilation lacks as a game.

However, Blizzard must be commended for giving their game a real living story that engrosses. I was never a fan of WarCraft as much as Command and Conquer, so Blizzard Entertainment didn't make too happy. I found this awfully unfair, when all my friends were crazy for StarCraft and haven't even heard about Total Annihilation with its superior animation, spectacular battles and epic soundtrack. The thing with TA was that it was, at least in my opinion, overshadowed by StarCraft which came out the following year. In fact one of the many games to come out at this time was in fact, "Army Men" and RTS that doubles back on it's roots with the player controlling army toys with fighting in and around desks, rooms, and yards. It takes the old army toys to a new level. There is just something uniquely exciting for a boy when it comes to commanding and army and conquering virtual little enemies. I remember playing C&C for prolonged hours much to the disliking of my parents.

It came out in 1997 when the RTS craze was in full swing with the WarCraft and Command & Conquer series. Total Annihilation is one of those games, but is in fact an exception to the rule of the exception. Wolfenstein 3-D, Doom, Half-Life, the original WarCraft, Mario, etc.

Naturally there are exceptions and these are mainly games that cause a stir or craze via one of their innovations. Especially today when a plethora of them come out, in a few years many are all but forgotten and leave no impact on the world of gaming. Computer games have the bad tendency to age badly.
